When you think of great Canadian scientists, names like Alexander Graham Bell likely come to mind. However, who do you think of when trying to discover the top 10 Canadian life scientists of all time? Just googling the term “top 10 Canadian scientists” returns a variety of results which add up to way more than 10 famous personalities. Fortunately, through some due diligence and critical analysis, the Canadian Biotechnologist has been able to come up with a short list of top Canadian scientists that made significant contributions to the life sciences. Below is our compilation:

  1. Frederick Banting and Charles Best for the discovery of insulin in 1922. Granted, Banting and Best should really be counted as 1 and 2, but their names just seem to roll off of our tongues like the phrase peanut butter and jelly and so we will count them as just 1
  2. James Till and Ernest McCulloch for the discovery of stem cells in 1963
  3. Michael Smith for the development of site-based mutagenesis
  4. David Hubel who won the Nobel Prize for Mapping the Human Cortex in 1993
  5. Tak Mak for the discovery of t-cell receptors in 1983
  6. Sidney Altman winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939
  7. Victor Ling who discovered drug resistance in Cancer
  8. Maud Menten for his ground breaking work in enzyme kinetics
  9. David Suzuki, king of all that is life sciences for the mass public
  10. Lap Chee Tzui for the discovery of the cystic fibrosis gene
